Summary:
We see people from a whole range of countries in the United States. Every country and every culture has its own traditions and customs. I recently got the privilege of interviewing my mother to gain insights into her childhood experiences to help better understand the profound impact of traditions on shaping our family’s values and beliefs. I opened up the discussion covering topics like religion beliefs, cultural practices, food, childhood games, and many more to explore how cultural customs and heritage have evolved and differ from my mother’s generation to mine.
My mother provides a first person account of identity addressing anecdotes from her early life in Guerrero, Mexico, a small town that’s known for its beautiful traditions. We delved into the specific traditions that held special meaning for my mother. From cultural traditions to everyday routines, she emphasized the role these traditions played in shaping her into the person she is today.
One noticeable alteration highlighted in the conversation was the change in communication styles. My mother shared how in her generation people mostly talked to each other in person or wrote letters by hand. We explored the impact of technology and how it has affected conversations.
We discussed the evolving roles and responsibilities within the family structures. My mother shared insights into how gender roles and expectations have shifted, leading to a more equitable distribution of responsibilities in my generation. This change was attributed to broader societal shifts towards gender equality.
Another key area where change was discussed was around education and career choices. My mother talked about how in her generation, certain jobs were seen as more normal and expected, whereas my generation has had a wider range of career paths and fields of study to choose from. This shows how norms in society and the available opportunities have shifted over time.
My mother emphasizes throughout the interview her desire of preserving diverse and cultural traditions and instilling a sense of pride into the customs and heritage of our beautiful countries, in this case Mexico, and continue to carry this commitment on to future generations.
Overall, the interview between my mother and I and the questions asked concluded solely with reflections and the importance of passing down traditions, stories, and values to ensure a strong connection with our roots and beliefs of possible alternatives. We acknowledge that while our family culture has changed in certain ways (positively), the fundamental qualities of consciousness, guidance, love, support, and connection have not changed, giving our family a strong base that has endured through the generations.
Analysis:
Not only did the interview with my mother served as a meaningful exploration of our family’s cultural traditions and beliefs but It also deepened my appreciation for the traditions that have shaped us into the person we are today. It’s very inspiring to see the way my mother cherishes the traditions once practiced and uses them as future references as a result of empowering heritage and culture. Moving and adapting to a new environment filled with unlimited opportunities creates the possibility of bettering the lifestyle once lived. The typical old school traditions slowly start to progress into newer ideas and different modern customs.
The interview gave us a clear and important aspect about how our family’s culture is always changing not necessarily in a bad way but it’s an overturn to a new start, a new chain. It showed how societal changes, new technology, and people’s changing views affect our ancestors traditions, culture and heritage. It also pointed out the strong values that continue to connect our family over time. Sticking to your roots, embracing your culture, uncovering new modern opportunities, creating a better cycle will never be a crime instead will always be a reward towards future generations.
